Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada (CCNN) addresses the root causes of poverty by encountering and accompanying those living in poverty on a journey to economic equality and realizing a meaningful and purposeful life. The COVID-19 pandemic tragically altered lives across the globe and was harsher on our most vulnerable populations. Our Nursing Clinic administered over 3,000 vaccines last year and continues to host popup vaccine events statewide. Even with the end of the World Health Organization’s global public health emergency (5/5) and the U.S. COVID-19 emergency declaration (5/11), many in our communities continue to struggle. This was the genesis of our Elevating Families program, which is housed under our Thriving Families Support Center (Thrive) and uses an evidence-based economic mobility pathway approach to help low-income families become self-sufficient through mobility mentoring and wraparound support. The AmeriCorps C19 Disaster Case Manager will assess the needs of those still struggling due to the COVID-19 emergency while helping the agency navigate a post-pandemic normal. Through an agency-wide client intake process, staff will refer clients facing crises and instability due to the COVID-19 pandemic to the AmeriCorps C19 Disaster Case Manager. Using a trauma-informed approach, the AmeriCorps C19 Disaster Case Manager, who will be trained in Mobility Mentoring and Bridges out of Poverty, will assess each client’s unique situation and help them create a self-driven plan for sustainability. From meeting their most basic needs of food, clothing, shelter, and hygiene to engaging in deeper conversations to help them remove barriers to sustainability. Referrals may also include helping them obtain or renew government IDs, workforce development placement, bus vouchers for transportation support, rental and utility assistance, housing assistance, and more.
